Week two has come and gone! Time is flying by already. The students at school have already warmed up to me in just this short amount of time. Even though I don’t understand 99% of what they say to me I do understand this, “Juf Gina”. Juf in Dutch means teacher. This to me, is so special. To me, it means that they respect me and trust me… That in and of itself is rewarding. Being a teacher can be challenging. Being an English teacher in another country where it is not their first language is even more challenging. I taught a lesson this week on colors and used the story, “Pete the Cat, I Love My White Shoes” to introduce it. The students loved the catchy tune and started to sing along after just listening for a few moments. “I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes…” Later in the afternoon I heard that familiar tune but instead of saying white shoes, the child was singing, “I love my Lego, I love my Lego, I love my Lego, I love my Lego.” It brought a smile to my face to say the least. Next week on Tuesday, I will be going to see the King and Queen in The Hague- What a cool experience! (Although I will not actually be meeting them, I’ll be able to see them ride through town in their golden carriage pulled by eight horses. Then on Wednesday it is, “Sports Day” at the school! Sports Day is equivalent to Field Day where there are different games set up for the classes and the day is spent being active outside. I’m looking forward to this and will use it as an opportunity to get to know the students even better. The family is doing great and we are enjoying each other’s company! (At least, I’m enjoying theirs.) More to come soon! Greetings from The Netherlands!
